At Seaplane McDonough's camp, there is a sign that says "Alan Parrish" on it. Seaplane states he found the camp and that is used to be Alan's. Alan Parrish was the name of Robin Williams's character in Jumanji (1995), who was stuck in the game for 26 years.

Van Pelt is also the name of the villain in the original Jumanji movie from 1995. In the original movie, Van Pelt was an animal hunter. In the 2017 installment, Van Pelt can control animals.

The concept of the main characters getting sucked into the Jumanji game and having to rescue someone who was trapped there is based on the animated series Jumanji (1996) rather than the original film Jumanji (1995), which generally took out jungle hazards into the real world and sucked people in only occasionally.

It is revealed Alex entered and got trapped in the world of Jumanji in 1996. 1 year after the events of Jumanji (1995) when Judy and Peter Sheperd played the game and freed Alan Parish whom was trapped in Jumanji for 26 years.

While Jumanji has turned into a video game, parts of it pay homage to its previous board game mode:
- One clue appears as a rhyming couplet.
- Another clue appears in the form of an elephant token. This was Alan Parrish's game piece from Jumanji (1995), the last player who was stuck in the game for two decades.
- Albino rhinos appear in Jumanji. As a board game, one of its board game pieces was a white rhino.
- When the game is completed, the landscape shows interlocking paths that resemble Jumanji's board game layout.

At the end of the game, when the jewel is returned, the original board game path can be seen illuminated, surrounding the jaguar.

Colin Hanks makes a cameo at the end of the movie as adult Alex. Colin Hank's father actor Tom Hanks had previously starred opposite Karen Gillan in the suspense thriller The Circle (2017) and Colin Hanks had starred opposite Jack Black in the comedy Orange County (2002) 15 years earlier.
